Dreadful - I guess because prices for dogs/puppies are through the roof atm?? Stories of old ladies being assaulted for their dogs, people grabbing leads after asking to stroke dogs, ...

It'll be over my dead body!
Plus, I carry a small can of aerosol deodorant- just for emergencies you understand!

That is dreadful - all watch out for your pups! I am now very wary to let Axel off the lead in the park, it only takes a few seconds to snatch a dog.

This has been a known issue in Sweden for some time. Mostly Romani have been blamed for thefts but Irish Travelers are quite closely associated with dog thefts. I literally only leave Buddy at 3 trusted places where I never need more than 5 minutes to run an errand. He barks so much that people are loathe to approach him.

In the UK, it's become anyone after a fast buck - lockdown has made the value of (most) dogs skyrocket

Horrible, where I live dogs have always been stolen, none have ever been found, I've had men try to steal my third gsd puppy from the garden.
Awful for the dogs and owners alike.

Was looking where to post something similar, so will add it to this. Hope that's in order ? Dog thefts are still very prevalent all over the country, not just puppies there is value in ALL dogs adult female for breeding, pups for resale and adult males for dog baiting /fighting. Recently had a transit van abandoned when it became stuck in some flood water, when it was attended to be towed found 15 puppies left in there with no food or water. Some pups were chipped and came all the way to Cotswolds from Luton, their mum who was stolen at same time we assume was taken with offenders on foot when they left vehicle. Only advice I can give is try not to walk same route regularly and try to go where there are plenty of other walkers. If you can put a padlock on any gates that give access to your property. Its been noted that they scout areas and where a dog is in residence they put a blob of coloured paint on pavement outside property. Please be vigilant folks.
