Oh my - I have joined this forum needing some advice about my new German Shepherd puppy and I was drawn to this subject on Rainbow Bridge. I hadn't expected to have a puppy for a good few more years but we lost our beautiful Merlin on the 8th January due to a twisted gut. It was so quick and unexpected. He was 10 and a half and his ears never went up so people often thought he was a young dog.
His dad was a full Shepherd but his mum was described as three quarters shepherd and a quarter Border Collie. She didn't look like she had Collie in her and Merlin certainly had no traits of Collie. People asked us if he was a Leonberger, so who knows! He did look like one but not so big.
Losing him has broken our hearts. He was more than a dog. So kind and understanding, loved everyone, adored puppies and smaller dogs, but he was nobodies fool. We miss him so much. He was so full of love, beautiful inside and out.
My heart goes out to all of you who have lost your beautiful dogs. It truly is an ache in your heart, especially those first weeks and months. Hoping this puppy will help heal our hearts as Merlin helped heal them when we lost Bracken before him.

Ah that makes more sense then. On you other post I asked you to join up but as you have then forget that.ha!
A lot of us have recently lost some fantastic dogs mine included and know just how you are feeling. I lost my first through torsion (bloat or twisted gut) and it is a horrible thing to witness so I feel for you.
In your signature which you will see in your profile you can add your name and the rough area that you are from. You can also put a picture as your avatar under your name. This will prompt us senile ones who always forget members names and the names of their dogs.
Ask as many questions about almost anything and one of us will endeavour to answer it for you.

Hi and welcome. Bloat is awful - my own BT had bloat when he was about 2 years old & needed an urgent operation. He survived, but we're so over protective if he shows any of the same symptoms nowadays!

I think most of us here have 'lost' dogs, unexpectedly or inevitably. Hugs to you'n'yours frm T'n'me ... I know there's nothing anyone can say, but I've found these words a comfort, hope they're helpful for you.

Thank you Cockneychris, Caryll and Gtrmacs for your kind replies. I think only people who have had dogs and loved them can understand how losing them feels. So sad and so painful.
I am sorry to hear you lost your dog in the same way Cockneychris. It happens so suddenly. I was away at my daughter's when it happened to Merlin. My hubby rang me in the morning saying there was something really wrong with Merlin and we needed to get him to the vets. When he explained it was the first thing that came to mind although I had never seen it. I told him to get the vet down to him straight away and it wouldn't wait till I got there. Then it all happened so fast - got a call from the vet saying they had sedated him and keeping him alive till I got to say goodbye. Such a shock. But I guess some things are meant to be. The vet says sometimes the stomach can twist and die before the symptoms show.
Apparently there is something they can do to help stop the gut twisting now and I think I will have that done with Logan when we get him done at 6 months.
Those are beautiful words, gtrmacs and bring more than a tear to the eye!
Have to say I feel blessed in a way that I have had dreams and not so dreams of visits from Merlin. They only last a few seconds but it brings such comfort. I have had a few experiences of visits which I will put in a thread sometime if that's ok.

I've lost too many wonderful dogs over 40-odd years - yet somehow they never leave us ... Mine are all busy helping Tasha - and the forum dogs ...

They are all wonderful gtrmacs. Each time I have lost one I feel I will never love another as much. But I do and all for different reasons. Bless them all.

This is what we do. I know all folks are different - but I can't do the 'everything you catch out of the corner of your eye is a dog ...'. ymmv

Beautiful words there.
I had lost 3 of my dogs and never had any 'visits' from them. But 2 weeks after losing our 4th dog we had just bought a puppy home. It was a hot sunny day and we took the puppy into the garden. I had gone back inside, opened the fridge door and was about to put something back in when I found I couldn't as Bracken was sat behind the door. I began to tell him to move out the way so I could shut it. Then it hit me he was 'dead'. I saw him for all of 3 seconds but he was sat up looking straight at me, just inches away. It's something I will always treasure.
I have not physically seen Merlin but he came to me almost every night for over 3 weeks, some mornings too, just as I closed my eyes. Again only for seconds but he has licked me and pressed himself to me at the side of the bed and I have stroked his face. I even saw the image of a dog cage and his long nose looking inside to see what was there. I couldn't see what was inside but obviously some sort of puppy. Merlin loved puppies lols.

Apparently there is something they can do to help stop the gut twisting now and I think I will have that done with Logan when we get him done at 6 months. I think they'll only do that if the dog has already suffered torsion. Otherwise they leave well alone. Why are you neutering at 6 months?

The vet told me that's when they advise neutering to be done. She also told me a vet at the practice has a shepherd and she had had the op to help stop the torsion at the same time he had been neutered. She even recommended if we had another Goldendoodle instead of a shepherd to have the procedure done.
