I'm so totally broken.
My beautiful boy was given sleep last night.
His aggressive outbursts had been worsening (four times in a week) & on Wednesday evening he attacked me for no reason. I ended up in casualty with bites to my stomach and a large chunk bitten off of the end of my thumb.
I took him to the vet on Monday and had a long discussion. They think he was suffering from SOAS (sudden onset aggression syndrome) and each 'episode' was damaging his brain further. There is no treatment.
So for his welfare & our safety it was agreed to let him go. He went very peacefully, with his family loving him right to the end.
It's a comfort, in a way, to know he was so well loved & cared for & he really did love us as well. He just couldn't help himself.

Caryl I’m so sorry that you have been put in this position to have Badger euthanised. I know how you and the family adored him, but for your safety you have done the correct thing. I hope you recover quickly, I know how dog bites throb all around your body let alone in the spot that has been bitten. If you need to talk it out I am here on the end of the phone/ keyboard. I hope you recover quickly it must of been a bad shock to your systems. X.

Oh no, how awful for you and your family, it's so sad. Badger had the best life with you. Poor boy, it doesn't make it any easier but as you say, he couldn't help it. I've never heard of SAOS but could it be hereditary? We're all thinking of you.

So sorry to hear this caryll, our thoughts are with you at this time. You have done so much for Badger, given love, given him the best life he could ever have imagined (a lot of people would have given up much sooner considering the ADHD). He was loved, you are of course all heart-broken, but, as there is no cure, and you ending up in A&E, it was for the best. Sometimes life is cruel. As Jacqui, said, we are all here for you!

I've never heard of SAOS but could it be hereditary? We're all thinking of you. SOAS used to be called Bully Rage, but it's also well known in Cocker & Springer Spaniels. I think in some cases it's hereditary, but it isn't proven. Dr Robert Mugford is credited with connecting the condition between the bullies & spaniels (and one or two other breeds). But even he couldn't find either a hereditary link or an environmental link. I'd heard of it back in the 70's, but it's been much less prevalent in recent years. Badger's mum was totally sane & bomb proof, as was his dad. Also, his dad has fathered several litters without incident. It was also suggested that Badger may have been brain damaged 'in utero', and that would more than explain his various behavioural problems.

Will you recover OK from your injuries, Caryll?? I was thinking the same thing, can't be too careful with animal bites. Did you need a tetanus jab Caryll? Take care.

Yes, I'm fine. My thumb's a little sore, but not as bad as I thought it would be. The other bites weren't severe.
I did need a tetanus jab, and that actually hurt more than the bites!

Today has really hit hard. No idea why in particular, but everything has reminded me of 'Badger would have done this' or 'Badger would have done that'.
I swear I've cried for the last 12 hours. Still crying.
Don't know why. After all, it's only a dog.
If one more person hints that "it's only a dog" I swear I shall commit murder.

I agree, it's never only a dog and only those unfortunates who have never shared their life with a dog would say that. It's natural to be upset, after all we alter our lives to suit their needs and everything seems to revolve around them. It affects everyone differently doesn't it - how are your husband and daughter coping?
