I don't necessarily think that grain free is the way forward. Maybe wheat/corn free, but a certain amount of grain can be beneficial - ie oats and/or a small amount of rice.

Yes, but wasn't it the grain content spoiling which caused the deaths - in this particular case??

Yes, probably, but that's a fault in the manufacturing - a common problem with cheaper brands. Grain storage has to be right & then storage of the properly sealed bags after manufacture.
