It's an uncommon phenomenon, but not unheard of!

I had a mongrel named Sandy when I was a child. She was a Labrador/schnauzer mix rescue and I recall my parents not getting her spade because a vet said she was infertile, which was true until she was 6 years old and had the only heat of her life. She had 6 puppies with 6 different fathers and none of them resembled each other. Three of her puppies were green on the white parts of their fur but that only lasted a week or so. She was spade as soon as the puppies moved to their new homes. At the age of 6 she was old to have any litter much less than her first. She was a great mother for 3 weeks. After that she would only be with them to nurse and clean them. I was 13 and on summer break so I slept on the floor with the puppies every night. I didn't mind it one bit! I'd do the same thing now at age 46 if it was needed
