On the news today a dog owner let two dogs starve to death but is only banned from owning dogs for ten years.
Why are they not banned from owning dogs for life?.

Well, he should really be banned for life, but should it also not carry a prison sentence? Let's say you let your child starve to death, there would certainly be a prison sentence, so why not for dogs? They are, after all, in my eyes, family members, and the same rules should apply!

Because dogs are 'property'. They are "property" Is that by law? Seems odd to me, you cannot own a living creature, a table, yes, a TV set, yes, but isn't a living creature by nature something that can't be owned? They can all have a mind on their own, even goldfish, I know, limited intelligence, but still...

I get VERY upset if anything happens to any of my fish and today I was upset to see a Gull get run over and killed on my way home! This is despite the fact that I hate the blooming things making a horrible noise near my house.
I've noticed recently that more offenders are receiving jail terms for animal cruelty, but it still isn't enough. How on earth do they keep an eye on all the people that have been banned from keeping animals, perhaps they rely a lot on the public. If you knew someone that had done something like this and had been banned but then you saw them with an animal, you'd report it, wouldn't you? I know I would.

In fact any animal known as being 'reduced into captivity or possession' is classed as property."
