I have always kept a blanket over my dogs kennels to make them feel more secure. Thank God my husband wakes up early or I may have woken up to a dead puppy. Instead My husband found our 14 week old puppy exhausted, hanging from the top of his kennel. Kash had pulled in the blanket, chewed a hole in it, got his head stuck and then spun around creating a noose around his neck. He was so tired, he wouldn’t have been able to hold himself up much longer. I work in animal welfare and we often tell people to cover a puppy’s kennel at night. I will NEVER give that advice again. Please SHARE so that this doesn’t happen to someone else’s dog. The result could have been so much worse!

Apparently the answer is to put a sheet of ply or hardboard under the blanket - between it and the cage??

Awful!
I also used to have a blanket over Dempsey's crate.... never again.

That is dreadful! Why would a sheet of wood be helpful though?

That is dreadful! Why would a sheet of wood be helpful though? It'll stop the cloth being pulled through.

Doh - I am an idiot. The funny thing is that we did put a sheet of wood on top of the crate ages ago, and then the blanket, but for totally different reasons, Axel climbs on top of the crate to go and look out of the window, and as he was growing, we thought it might be a good idea to do that, otherwise he could have gotten caught.

A couple of years ago a GSD pup (about 10 months or so) was pulling his blanket through his crate bars at Crufts. I told one of the exhibitors who told the owner & they took the blanket off.
Just goes to show.

That looks awful, thank goodness the puppy survived.
