A retractable lead was an absolute godsend for me when I was house-training Max, he would go out in the garden, sometimes at about 2am and then he'd decide that a game of chase was in order before we could come back inside! Putting him on a retractable lead was the best way to get back indoors to sleep!
They are a good idea when used correctly, although not that good for a big dog.

When my Border Collies did that, I put a long line on them. Most of my other dogs have been too lazy/tired to give me the run around at night!

It was all I had at the time, and it worked so I was happy.

When we were on holiday 2 years ago, in Folkestone, a lady with a fluffy bichon type dog got his extendable lead wrapped around Dempsey's foot. How he never bit the dog, I don't know, but he certainly made it squeal.
The lady went hysterical & was no use at all shouting "That mad dog's going to kill my baby. Aaaah, Aaaah!"
People thought Dempsey had attacked a baby! We collected quite an audience.

The trouble is that people don't use extendable leads properly.
It's not unusual to see dogs on leads that are extended way too far when walking along the road, dogs are allowed to go far too close to the road. I always think that if you're using an extendable lead, they should be kept short apart from when being used in open spaces. As a driver I'm always concerned to see dogs running towards the road, it freaks me out!!

... a lady with a fluffy bichon type dog got his extendable lead wrapped around Dempsey's foot ... Recently, someone with a small dog managed to completely hog-tie Tasha with one of those nylon cord things Luckily she's much more biddable nowadays ...

When we had Lola, hubby wanted to get one of those things, and well, I did not stop him (luckily it was not one of the nylon cord ones). We also had a normal lead. I used that awful extendable thing once, came back indoors and told him it was useless to me, I would not be using it again. Funnily, he did not use it very long either...
